the kaya rattie

Our little Kaya passed on November 30th while we were in St. George. The timing couldn't have been any better. It sounds funny, but it was a blessing that she died when she did.

We knew it was coming and she seemed to be getting weaker during her last weeks. So we decided to take her on our trip with us; we couldn't just leave her at home, she was too cute. I held her on my lap the whole drive up and she was as sweet as ever. She was her normal self the first day we were there, but by Saturday she looked really tired. We didn't want her to suffer and we hoped she would pass in the night. And she did, she went peacefully in her sleep and we got to bury her in the red dirt of St. George on Sunday morning.

Kaya was so soft and cuddly. She hated getting a bath but she loved to lick and nibble our fingers. She loved to hang out on the couch. She loved to snuggle. She knew us and would come when we called her name. We kept her out of the cage as much as possible and as soon as we'd put her away for the night, she'd bite and claw at the cage door to be let out again. She loved to explore and she loved a good treat.

I think getting our ratties was one of the best decisions I have ever made. As hard and sad as it sometimes is, I wouldn't change our experiences for anything. It's funny how much our little pet rats taught us. We will miss them. It seems so boring without any ratties running around!

ms kaya

Some of you may not care to see or hear about our cute rattie Kaya. But every once in a while I get the urge to post about her. I thought I'd follow that urge today.

Kaya is now two years old and the older she gets, the cuter she gets. All she wants to do is snuggle us. As soon as we take her out, she finds a spot on our lap and lays down to snuggle or sleep. If we stop petting her, she finds a way to move her body under our hand. She moves a lot slower now and has mellowed out, which is so fun. She still comes when we call her, it's really cute. Her favorite treats are nutter butters, grapes and cheese. When we are home we keep her out all the time (her cage is so lonely) and she usually just chills with us while we talk or watch TV. She also likes to groom us by licking our fingers and hands. We are good to her and she is good to us. She is a great companion and I would take her with me everywhere, if I could.

Ramble

Today has been an interesting day. I set my alarm to go off a little earlier than usual because I wanted to clean the house and start reading my book I got from the library last night. I also had to make lunch for myself because I wasn’t coming home to eat. I rarely sleep in past my alarm, but I turned the alarm off after it sounded and didn’t get up till 7:25! I was freaking out, running around the house trying to tidy up for the “Bond Inspection” today. We have to hide Kaya when people come into the apartment because we’re not allowed to have her in there. I don’t know what they do in the “bond inspection” but I wanted the apartment to look decent. I ended up getting pretty much everything done that I wanted to, including brushing my hair and putting some clothes on. I finished just in time to leave for work at 7:45. These are the days when I am glad I don’t wear makeup and I don’t do my hair.

Work is work, it always is. Some days are better than others. This morning was particularly slow. There are pros and cons of work being slow. One pro: no stress. One con: boring.

On my lunch break I ran over to Michael’s to buy some wood craft sticks for a service project that the Young Women started and I am finishing. I was determined to go in, only buy the sticks, and leave. Of course that didn’t happen; I ended up buying some great colored paper and a cool pen. I also bought a mini hot glue gun (I know, random). The rest of my lunch was spent sitting in the car reading my book. I am always amazed at how knowledge transfers into your brain. Reading is so great.

The afternoon at work picked up a little. It was the perfect pace. Not busy enough to have a constant interruption of what I am doing, but a nice steady flow of students coming in.

I have been anxious all day wondering if the hiding spot we put Kaya in will be good enough. I also wonder if they will hear her eating or drinking as they walk through. I am excited to see her when I get home. Sometimes when I walk in the door, Eric will be holding Kaya waiting to greet me after my day at work, it’s really cute.

Eric wants to go on a bike ride after work today. I have mixed feeling about this. But I will go and it will be enjoyable. On Eric’s birthday he asked me to do 3 things this week: one – go on a bike ride with him, two – play tennis with him, three – go running once. These were his birthday wishes (my present to him) and all I could do was try and grant them to the best of my abilities. I have completed 2 of the 3 tasks. After the bike ride tonight, I will have kept my commitment (which is sometimes, something hard for me to do).

The day started out gorgeous with beautiful blue skies and not a cloud in sight. As I look out the window it has changed; the wind has blown in a slight haze. Oh and The Office is on tonight.

Rory

Our precious little Rory decided to leave us today. It's still hard for me to believe and it hurts my heart badly. I came home from work yesterday and she was in her cage not responsive to any of the normal things that would get her excited. We took her out and tried to help her get better but it wasn't meant to be. We thought she would go in the night, but she didn't. This morning, she was so sad and suffering so much, Eric took her to the vet and put her down.

She was such a special rat. She was always so sweet. She would lick and snuggle you. She had a very nice demeanor. We thought she was the cutest rat that ever lived.

We knew that she wouldn't live that long(life span is about 2 years)but it was just so sudden and quick. We didn't know what hit us. It may be hard for people to understand how much this little rat affected our lives in such a positive way. Some may say, "it was just a rat". But she was just not any rat, she was our Rory. Our sweet, little, loving, feisty Rory. She made us laugh, smile and draw closer together. It is hard to say goodbye to someone that has touched your life so deeply. We love you and we will miss you Rory!

Happy Birthday Ratties

We've had the ratties now for a year. And we love them more each day. They truly are so special to us. I know, its kind of weird, but thats what makes it so fun. They are like our little babies. We always tell each other how cute they are and we love holding them and taking care of them.

So HAPPY BIRTHDAY RATTIES

I can't wait till we have real babies to love and celebrate!

random stuff

There are a few random things we wanted to post about, but never did. So here they are.

It's a box!

This won't sound half as funny as it was, but I'll try anyway. Just before Halloween, Andrew made this box and we went to peoples houses and knocked on their door and when they opened their door they would find this box on their doorstep, then the box would pop up like it just sprouted legs. The rest of us watched from a distance. The people were always friendly, saying "oh look it's a box" then, you could see in their faces as the awkwardness hits and people think -what the heck is going on? Is this a neighbor kid who wants some candy? Why isn't he saying something? It must be a friend or someone we know. Or maybe its some scary phsyco. "who's in the box?" they would always ask. The box would then shake its hilarious, enormous head side to side. Then the box would walk itself into walls or into the street and sit itself down. There were actually some people who, after several minutes of this, just closed their door and let the box go on its way. I am still baffled by this. These people still have no idea who this mysterious box that showed up on their door step was. We did this with Andrew, Loni, Troy, and Mindi. Troy also played the part of the box a couple times.

The Fires

This was what the air and the sun looked like where we were in Moorpark when all the fires were going on.

Our Rats

Our rats are still doing good and are still cute. They are a little sad they don't have as much space where they can play and we made their cage smaller to work in this apartment but they are doing alright.

Rusty

When we were at Tiff's parents house I started to kinda like Rusty a little bit. He liked me cause I would take him running with me. I'll admit he can be pretty cute sometimes. This is him sleeping in the back of my knee as I watched the Office.

the 2 things i love the most right now

NUMBER 1
The Rascals (as I like to call them)
They are so cute! Always trying to escape and get into things. Licking our fingers like crazy and eating anything they can get their little paws on. Its amazing how much we love them, play with them and talk to them like they can hear and understand us. They are so fun!
NUMBER 2
The best Eric ever - aka my husband
I love this picture. I took it last weekend when we went on a hike together. He is just so cute, I want to squeeze him. I am so lucky to have such a understanding, sensitive and supportive husband. He always makes me laugh and we have so much fun together. Sometimes I just sit at work and think about how funny he is, it always brings a smile to my face. In the evenings lately, we have been playing soccer together in our front yard area. I have really been enjoying it, we make a great team. I am so grateful for everything he does for me. I must be in a loving mood today cause I sure love Eric and everything that goes along with who he is.
