Polebridge

Today I was craving some snickerdoodles from the Polebridge Mercantile in Polebridge, Montana. This craving prompted my post.

You lose things as you travel north. First to go is the cell phone connection, lost before you’re barely out of town. Then the power lines disappear, then the driveways. No houses, no streetlights, no billboards. When you lose the pavement, you’re still just a dozen miles out of town, “but you have the feeling you’ve crossed a boundary”. And still the road tracks north.

Left behind is the town and all the hurry-up that means. Out ahead is wildness, if not wilderness, the unknown. It’s like some ancient metaphor, this road serves as penance, stripping away worldly distractions one by one before you can find what really matters. And there, at the end of the road, the rapture, heavenly manna. Fresh-baked bread. And cinnamon rolls. And sinful huckleberry bearclaws, piping hot straight from the oven.

A lot of people see Polebridge as a utopia, or a place so special it’s outside the real world. Maybe that’s because of what they must leave behind on the way in. Or maybe because life here is a choice, deliberately made. I didn't write this, but I had to use it because it described so well why I like this little place so much. Original article here.
Polebridge was one of the many places we stopped at last August. It is hard to express the feelings I felt during our trip. They were felt so intensely and strong. I had never felt like that in my life and have not felt like that since. I felt complete, free and inspired.

We pulled into Polebridge on August 25th on our way to go backpacking in (the bear infested) Glacier National Park. The long empty road to Polebridge was relaxing. Once there, we checked out the "Merc" and explored the 2 dirt roads in town. We snacked on some A-mazing cookies and then napped in the car. We ate dinner and then left the little town to find our campsite near the lake for the night.

We then backpacked for 4 days in Glacier. (that deserves a whole seperate post)

After we finished our backpacking adventure, we headed back to Polebridge. It's the only road back to the world. We decided to fill our empty stomachs at the only restaurant around, the Northern Lights Saloon. It was delicious and the town is so laid back. We chatted with other traveleres who had just backpacked the same trail as us.

Before our backpacking trip, we had decided that after backpacking we would treat ourselves and stay a night in Polebridge at the North Fork Hostel. We showered for the first time in days in this little tiny bathroom in the owners home. Also, there is no electricity. We used a candle as our light.

We found the tiny old cabin we were to sleep in, behind the main Hostel house. It was old, had no heater and had a bunk bed and 1 queen bed in the tiny space. But it was the coziest little thing you could imagine. And it was better than sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag. This is what I wrote in our travel journal that night...

Well here we are. We made it out alive. A little tired and sore though. I am sitting inside our hostel cabin at the North Fork Hostel in Polebridge, MT. Writing in my book by the light of the kerosene lamp. Eric is laying in bed falling asleep. I am happy. Life feels so calm and complete.

I love you Polebridge and I love how you changed the way I look at life.

we're home

We got home at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning. It's funny because we were always asleep by 10:30 the whole trip. The first thing people ask is "doesn't it feel good to be home?" It doesn't. It was so great to wake up every morning in a new different part of the world. This trip was such a great experience for us. After we got home, I went and got the car washed and while I was waiting I sent Tiff a text that I think sums up how we feel. It said " I wish I was walking around a touristy gift shop with no place to be but there." It was great to come into some new little townsite and get an ice cream cone and walk around and check out the shops. It was great to wake up in our tent and talk about the hike we had planned for that day.

Too much to say

We have way too many sweet pictures to show and details to share. It is impossible to put it all here. So, here are a few and maybe we will keep telling stories via the blog when we are home, and we will share pictures and tell stories to anyone who is interested and probably a lot of people who aren't.

Some of these pictures are from Canada and some from Glacier.

Tiffany is Awesome!!!

I wanted to write a post because I had to tell everyone how great Tiffany is. We just got back from a crazy trip. We backpacked for four days in Glacier. We have been camping for almost three weeks now but it is a whole different thing to be backpacking. It is crazy to be away from everything for that long, to not even see a car, running water, electricity. We hiked a total of 38 miles, climbed over 3700 ft. (then descended it), and camped in two different areas that had special advisiory for recent grizzly bear activity. We traversed steep mountain wall edges, and hiked through the rain/snow. I never once waited for or slowed down for Tiff. She is a trooper. She had to put up with my complaining about my knee hurting and my feet getting sore, and the stench of my body. Sorry to write a cheesy post, but to find a girl like Tiff is pretty amazing. I am lucky.

We really want to post pictures of the trip but the computer situation in these parts of the world is something else. more as soon as possible.

back in the U.S., eh

Yesterday we drove out of Canada and back into the United States. Its good to be back in a great country. We loved Canada. We went on some more hikes and ate some really good food. we went to some more hot springs (so nice) and slept in the car (not so nice). And now we are on our way to Glacier. From what we can tell, the fires are dying down and the smoke has cleared so hopefully we will be able to enjoy our time in Glacier. We are having such a great experience. We'll post more pictures soon. Thanks for all your comments, we love reading them.

Oh Canada!

We went to the Banff Hot Springs, which is what this first picture is of. We paid 15.oo to get in them and the whole time we were wondering why we wanted to pay money to get in this pool with all these people. But since then, we haven't stopped talking about going back and how good it felt. We hiked near Lake Ohara in Yoho Park and saw a ton of these cute little guys on our way.

This is one of the many pictures I took from the car as Eric raced by all the beautiful spots. There are just too many to stop at. Lastly, Eric and I walked on Athbasca Glacier, which was really neat and interesting. And thanks little Andrew for all the cute messages!

We finally got to upload some pictures. We are getting charged by the minute, so I wont say much. The first pictures are from Jackson hole (rafting and backpacking). Then Old Faithful and finally some from Canada. We'll put more pictures up soon. We are having so much fun except there is a lot a driving. Enjoy!

the adventure...

well, we haven't figured out a way to post any pictures to the blog yet. But I'll give you an update on the trip so far and hopefully soon, you will get to see some pictures.

We rafted the Snake River by ourselves in Jackson Hole. It was so amazing. The water level is really low so the rapids aren't very big. It was so fun, we had a blast. We backpacked in the Grand Tetons for 2 days and that was also quite amazing. We hiked about 7 miles the first day and jumped in Holly Lake near the end of our hiking that day. I got a mild case of Altitude sickness in the afternoon. Eric is amazing, he is always taking care of me and making sure I am drinking enough water, etc. The second day we hiked 12 miles. The second day was all down hill and the sights were amazing. We were several feet away from Moose 2 different times. The Tetons are very inspiring. We finally made it back to the car in the afternoon, it was a long day.

We took off to Yellowstone and saw Old Faithful and some other interesting sights. We only stayed in Yellowstone for 1 day. Now we are on our way to Glacier (last night we found an LDS church in Bozeman and parked in the parking lot and slept in the car). We stopped at a public library in Whitefish, MT to use the internet. There are several fires in Montana right now and the air is filled with smoke everywhere. Its making it a little hard to enjoy the drive, but hopefully when we get to Glacier it will be worth it.

There is too much to tell and so many fun stories to share; like how crazy Eric gets when he eats ice cream. I can't wait to tell you all about them. The pictures we have taken are amazing and we'll post them as soon as possible.

The best part about the trip so far is just being with Eric. It is so great to create these amazing memories with someone so fun and great to be around. We are being as spontaneous as I think it is possible to be and sometimes that comes with some arguing and trying to figure things out. But it is such a great adventure and I'm glad to share it with Eric.

the decision we've all been waiting for

As most of you know, Eric and I have been going crazy trying to figure out what we are going to do with our lives. We have finally made some decisions and we feel really good about them and we are excited for the adventures that await us.

Eric's last day at his job was about a week ago. Last Friday I put in my notice at my job and my last day working will be August 10th. Eric is doing a triathlon in Schofield, UT (the highest elevation tri in the nation) on Saturday August 11th. Then we will head out on our adventure Sunday morning, August 12th.

This is our plan:

Jackson Hole, WY
Backpacking

Yellowstone National Park, WY
Hiking/Camping

Glacier National Park, MT
Backpacking

Banff National Park, Alberta Canada
Hiking/Camping

Jasper National Park, Alberta Canada
Hiking/camping

Vancouver, BC Canada
Hotel

Lava Hot Springs, ID
Camping

This map shows where we will be going.
We will arrive home sometime between September 3rd-4th.

Then I fly out to California September 6th for a Girls Weekend with the girls in my fam. Now the reason for the one way ticket. Eric is going to drive to California on Sunday September 9th and meet me there. We will then drive back home a week or so later. Eric convinced me to post that I bought a one way ticket to Cali. He wanted to trick everyone into thinking I wasn't coming back.

We are thinking very seriously about moving. We would really like to, but first Eric has to find a job somewhere. So that's our next step after our trip... find Eric a job somewhere, anywhere. We will go wherever that job may be, if it is a good opportunity. We're looking for jobs in Utah, California and Arizona.

We look forward to sharing these adventures together and we are excited for our trip and whatever comes after that. And don't worry, we'll keep you all posted!
